Albano Jerónimo wins Best Lead Performance award

According to the GDA Foundation, Albano Jerónimo has been awarded the Best Lead Actor prize, worth 4,000 euros, for his role in the film “O Pior Homem de Londres,” directed by Rodrigo Areias.

Valerie Braddell received the Best Supporting Actor prize for her performance in the feature film “Estamos no Ar,” by Diogo Costa Amarante. This award has a monetary value of 3,000 euros.

The New Talent award, valued at 2,000 euros, was given to actress and singer Eliana Rosa, the main character in the film “Manga D’Terra,” directed by Basil da Cunha.

The jury for this edition comprised actresses Margarida Marinho and Margarida Vila-Nova, along with actor João Vicente, who evaluated performances in 38 national feature films debuted in theaters in 2024.

Albano Jerónimo is among the most sought-after Portuguese actors in national cinema and audiovisual productions, notably in the fiction series “Rabo de Peixe” and “Lume,” the comedy series “Ruído,” and the still unreleased films “Aquí” and “Memórias do Cárcere.”

His participation in Rodrigo Areias’s “O Pior Homem de Londres,” where he portrays Charles Augustus Howell, a dubious art dealer born in Porto, had previously earned him a Sophia Best Actor award this year.

In “Estamos no Ar,” Valerie Braddell plays one of the three central characters, Júlia, who resides in a nursing home and tries to rid herself of her husband’s haunting presence, which appears in the form of her best friend, demanding explanations for everything she does.

Anglo-Portuguese Valerie Braddell has worked since the 1980s in theater – in production, directing, and acting –, television, and film, both in Portugal and internationally. Her cinematic contributions include roles in “As sacrificadas” by Aurelie Oliveira, “As linhas de Wellington” by Valeria Sarmiento, and “Soldado Milhões” by Jorge Paixão da Costa.

Eliana Rosa, a Cape Verdean singer and actress residing in Portugal, released the EP “Mornabeza” this year and debuted her film career as the protagonist in “Manga d’Terra.”

In Basil da Cunha’s film, Eliana Rosa’s character, Rosa, is a woman who left Cape Verde to settle in Reboleira, Amadora. “Caught between mob harassment and daily police violence, Rosa seeks solace among the women of the community. Yet, her true escape is music,” the synopsis notes.

The GDA Foundation’s Cinema Actors Awards were presented today at the Teatro da Trindade, Lisbon, marking their 18th edition.
