Albuquerque hopes that the country “unsticks” from instability

The President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, expressed concerns over the current political instability in the country, urging the establishment of an electoral system that ensures governmental stability. In a conversation with journalists after casting his vote at Escola Básica da Ajuda in Funchal around 12:20 PM, Albuquerque emphasized the need for electoral systems that foster strong connections with voters and favor the formation of government majorities.

“Our country appears to be stuck,” Albuquerque remarked, highlighting the ongoing political turmoil. He advocated for a legislative framework that facilitates stability, addressing the significant challenges facing the nation. He criticized the current political climate, describing it as disconnected from the rapidly changing global and European geopolitical landscapes. Albuquerque expressed frustration over campaign promises focused on distributing minimal financial aid rather than addressing more substantial issues.

Albuquerque noted a slight decrease in voter turnout in the region compared to the last elections, attributing this to football championship celebrations on Saturday night and a general voter fatigue. According to the Secretariat-General of the Ministry of Internal Administration (SGMAI), about 10.8 million voters are eligible to participate in today’s early legislative elections.

A total of 230 deputies will be elected across 22 electoral constituencies—18 in mainland Portugal, with additional constituencies in the Azores, Madeira, Europe, and outside Europe. The election is projected to cost approximately 26.5 million euros. This election sees 21 political parties contesting, an increase of three compared to the March elections last year. The Social Liberal Party (PLS) is participating for the first time, joining established parties such as the Social Democratic Party (PSD)/CDS-PP, the Socialist Party (PS), Chega, Liberal Initiative (IL), Left Bloc (BE), CDU (PCP/PEV), Livre, PAN, and others. Parties with lists solely in the autonomous regions include MPT, PTP, and PSD/CDS/PPM.
