The bivalves will be destroyed. The 22-year-old man was identified during a road operation.
On Friday, the National Republican Guard (GNR) seized more than 800 kilograms (kg) of Japanese clams (Ruditapes phippinarum) in the municipality of Alcochete, Setúbal district.
According to a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto, the seizure was made as part of a road inspection operation, during which the military detected a vehicle “transporting shellfish in an irregular situation”.
According to the GNR’s press release, a 22-year-old man was identified during the operation and “the respective administrative offense notice was drawn up for lack of a registration document”.
The authorities also point out that after the hygiene check, they will be destroyed.
The GNR recalls that the capture, deposit and dispatch of this type of bivalve, without being subjected to purification or hygienic control, can jeopardize public health, if they are introduced for consumption, due to possible contamination with toxins, and the document proving the origin is fundamental for the prevention of irregular introduction for consumption.
