The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange weather warning for three districts, remaining in effect until 00:00 on Sunday. In Viseu and Vila Real, the warning is set to last until 18:00 on Friday due to “persistent very high maximum temperatures,” before downgrading to a yellow warning, the least severe on a scale of three.
Additionally, the orange warning is active until 18:00 today in the districts of Évora, Setúbal, Santarém, Beja, and Portalegre, before downgrading to yellow, which is expected to remain until at least Sunday.
The districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga are also under a yellow warning for heat until 18:00 today. In Coimbra and Leiria, the warning extends until 18:00 on Friday, and in Faro, it continues until 18:00 on Sunday.
The IPMA issues warnings – red, orange, and yellow – when there is a meteorological risk situation, evaluated as high, moderate, or low risk.
Temperatures in the interior regions are expected to remain very high today and on Friday, accompanied by intense southerly winds, increasing the risk of wildfires in those areas.
Portugal has been on alert for rural fire risk since August 2nd. This year, 63,247 hectares of forested areas have burned, with half occurring in the last three weeks, across 5,963 fires, primarily in the northern and central regions.
