Starting this Sunday, mainland Portugal will be affected by a hot and dry air mass originating from North Africa, leading to a significant rise in temperature between today and Tuesday, warns the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), which has issued a yellow weather warning for several districts starting Monday morning.

Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Lisbon, Santarém, Setúbal, Portalegre, Évora, Beja, and Faro will be under a yellow warning from 9:00 AM on Monday due to the hot weather.

The warning will extend to all districts across the mainland on Tuesday and will remain in effect at least until midnight on Wednesday.

The yellow warning, the least severe on a three-level scale, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for specific activities dependent on meteorological conditions.

According to IPMA, “the forecasted maximum temperature values will exceed 30°C throughout the territory, except in some areas of the western coastal strip (where periods of mist or fog may occur), potentially surpassing 40°C in Alentejo and the valleys of the Tagus and Douro.”

Nights will also be warm, with minimum temperatures expected to exceed 20°C starting tomorrow in several regions.

Regarding the wind, IPMA forecasts light or moderate winds, “mainly from the east and temporarily shifting to the west during the afternoon along the coastal strip.”

This weather situation is also expected to bring suspended dust from North Africa starting Monday, peaking in concentration on Wednesday, the 18th.
