“With three months until the elections, Carlos Moedas rushes to the Ministry of Internal Administration to do what he failed to do in a timely manner and to make others share responsibility,” stated the Socialist candidate on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
The matter concerns a meeting held this morning between the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, and the Minister of Internal Administration (MAI), Maria Lúcia Amaral, which had been requested on June 9 “with urgency” to discuss “solutions for the security issues the city faces.”
Following the meeting, Carlos Moedas announced to journalists that the municipality and the Government would develop a specific security plan for the city, although no date for its implementation has been set.
“We are going to establish a specific action plan for Lisbon, and I think it’s very important. It shows the vision of the minister and also acknowledges the situation in Lisbon,” said the mayor, who was elected in 2021 by the “New Times” coalition (PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Alliance).
However, according to Alexandra Leitão, this meeting with the MAI was a “staging,” as a plan was presented “without deadlines, without a schedule, and without measures.”
“He talks a lot about security but did not act when he had the opportunity,” she criticized.
For the former PS parliamentary leader, “Lisbon needs concrete measures,” such as “more municipal police officers, better public lighting,” the installation of all “already licensed” video surveillance, and the regulation of “nightlife.”
“Lisbon needs someone who acts, not someone who pretends to act,” stated the Socialist candidate.
In addition to Alexandra Leitão, the candidacies of João Ferreira (CDU), Carolina Serrão (BE), Ossanda Líber (Nova Direita), José Pinto Coelho (Ergue-te), and Bruno Mascarenhas (Chega) have so far been announced for the Lisbon City Hall presidency in the local elections on October 12.
Carlos Moedas has yet to confirm a reelection bid for the presidency of Lisbon City Hall.
During his current term (2021-2025), the social democrat Carlos Moedas governs Lisbon without an absolute majority, having been elected by the PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Alliance coalition.
