The Socialist Alexandra Leitão expressed her gratitude to Pedro Nuno Santos for his “dedication, commitment, and courage” during his tenure as Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), a position he relinquished on Saturday.
“Following a tough defeat for everyone, on the day Pedro Nuno Santos steps down as Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, I wanted to publicly thank him for the dedication, commitment, and courage with which he fulfilled the role, a difficult task in the current national and international context, and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” wrote the PS candidate for the presidency of Lisbon City Council in a message posted on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Notably, last week, Alexandra Leitão issued a denial after the magazine Sábado reported that she had called for Pedro Nuno Santos’s resignation following the severe defeat in the legislative elections on May 18.
Today, Pedro Nuno Santos officially stepped down from the party’s leadership, and it was decided that the direct elections to choose the new Secretary-General will take place on June 27 and 28.

Currently, José Luís Carneiro is the only official candidate for the leadership of the PS. Pedro Nuno Santos will, for now, be temporarily replaced by the president of the PS, Carlos César.
