Algarve citrus farming promotes the internationalization of the PGI in four countries

The first promotional event will be held between September 30 and October 2 in Madrid, featuring Citrinos do Algarve IGP at the “Fruit Attraction” trade fair. This is part of a series of four initiatives targeting these external markets and three actions in the Algarve region, scheduled until the end of 2026, according to a statement from AlgarOrange.

“Spain, France, Germany, and Canada were chosen not only for their growth potential for Citrinos do Algarve IGP but also for hosting the largest international fairs in the sector, attracting thousands of potential clients from around the world,” explained the Algarve citrus producers’ association.

The goal of these activities is to “increase international recognition, notoriety, and visibility” of the IGP and “promote its quality, differentiation, and added value in the perception of international consumers,” stated AlgarOrange, emphasizing the region’s role as Portugal’s largest citrus producer.

The chosen slogan for this initiative is “Get the taste. Feel the sun.” It invites consumers to taste oranges, tangerines, clementines, or lemons produced in the Algarve under optimal conditions, the statement added.

Among the “excellent” conditions for Algarve IGP Citrus farming are the “soil and climate” of the region, where sun exposure allows fruits to achieve a “perfect balance between sweetness and acidity” or a “high juice content,” described the producers’ association.

“This is a project of scale and ambition that will place Citrinos do Algarve IGP on the international map. We are opening doors in strategic markets and strengthening the region’s companies’ competitiveness,” said José Oliveira, president of AlgarOrange, as quoted in the statement.

The citrus producers’ association noted that this IGP promotion strategy is part of the “Internacionalizar + Algarve 3.0” project, funded by the European Algarve2030 Program, aiming to enhance the international recognition of the region.

The project is co-promoted by NERA – Association of Enterprises of the Algarve Region, AlgarOrange, the Algarve Tourism Association, the Algarve Wine Commission, the Algarve Tourism Region, and the University of Algarve, it added.

Citrinos do Algarve IGP production involves 15 regional operators in the municipalities of Albufeira, Castro Marim, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos, Loulé (except the parish of Ameixial), Monchique, Olhão, Portimão, São Brás de Alportel, Silves, Tavira (except for the parish of Cachopo), and Vila Real de Santo António.

The production of Citrinos do Algarve IGP exceeded 64,000 tons in the 2023/2024 harvest, marking the “highest value in the last eight years,” the association quantified.
