Algarvian musical projects perform in Central Park in New York

The event takes place as part of the international program by the Arte Institute of New York, which has been promoting and providing visibility to Portuguese artists abroad, with a mission to internationalize contemporary Portuguese culture.

Projects from the Algarve will open the show for renowned American actor Morgan Freeman, founder and narrator of the Symphonic Blues project.

The free-entry event is set to gather five thousand people in the heart of Manhattan.

“With this participation, Fusível and Mirage People become representatives of contemporary Algarve music on one of the world’s largest cultural stages, bringing national sounds to a global audience,” stated the Arte Institute in a communiqué sent to the Lusa agency.

Roughly a month later, on September 28, the Arte Institute will host the 9th edition of “Portugal in Soho,” an initiative that celebrates Portuguese culture and heritage in the New York neighborhood of SoHo.

Aiming to recreate the era when Portuguese people made this area of Manhattan their gateway to America in pursuit of a better life, “Portugal in Soho” will recreate the community’s meeting points through a journey in time and space, defining Luso heritage through a series of events.

The event will take place on Sullivan Street from 11:30 AM (local time, 4:30 PM in Lisbon) and will include various free activities with the participation of several local organizations and businesses.

“Once again, the Arte Institute aims to create two major moments in the New York summer for Portugal and contemporary Portuguese culture, providing significant visibility for our country and its arts,” explained Ana Miranda, director of the Arte Institute.

“The fact that either of these events has been happening for several years now proves the sustainability that projects of this nature can achieve, bridging what the first Portuguese left in the city of Manhattan and what the current generation of national artists brings,” she added.

Founded in 2011, the Arte Institute is a New York-based organization that promotes the production and spread of Portuguese contemporary art and cultural projects.
