Alice, Marta, Pedro… Here’s the list of names for the upcoming storms

This Monday, September 1, marks the start of the meteorological autumn, although officially this season only begins on September 22.

Being a season typically characterized by storms, meteorological agencies prepare in advance to receive them.

In this context, the list of names for high-impact storms for the 2025/26 season was revealed this Sunday by the Facebook page Meteo Trás os Montes – Portugal.

Among the names are distinctly Portuguese ones such as Alice, Benjamim, Claúdia, Davide, Emília, Goretti, Leonardo, Marta, Pedro, Regina, Samuel, and Vítor. Additionally, there are names with foreign pronunciation: Francis, Harry, Ingrid, Joseph, Kristin, Nils, Oriana, Therese, and Wilma.

According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), “a name is assigned to all depressions that trigger an orange or red wind warning (from 91km/h) in the international meteorological warning system (Meteoalarm).”

Thus, the first country to issue this warning names the depression, following the list, and informs the other countries, which must maintain the name.

“The naming of storms is a joint project of Europe’s meteorological services, under the auspices of EUMETNET. IPMA belongs to the southwest (SW) group, which includes the meteorological services of Spain (AEMET), France (Météo-France), Belgium (RMI), and Luxembourg (MeteoLux),” the statement reads further.
