Warnings for strong maritime agitation have been issued for the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Lisbon, Setúbal, Beja, and Faro, stated IPMA in a communication.
The warning will be in effect until 12 PM in the northern and central districts (Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, and Lisbon) with waves from the west/northwest expected to reach significant heights of five to six meters, potentially reaching a maximum height of nine meters.
In the case of the southern districts (Setúbal, Beja, and Faro), the orange warning for strong maritime agitation will be in place until 9 AM.
In all of these ten districts, the orange warning will be replaced by a yellow warning, which will remain in effect until 9 PM today, due to west/northwest waves with heights of four to five meters.
IPMA has also issued a yellow warning for precipitation due to “showers, sometimes strong and occasionally in the form of hail” for seven districts: Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Vila Real, and Viseu.
These warnings will be in effect until 6 AM.
The orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high-risk meteorological situation,” while the yellow warning applies to situations that pose a risk for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.
Continental Portugal is being affected by a cold frontal surface with moderate to strong activity, causing rain, thunderstorms, and wind, according to IPMA. The wind is expected to blow “strong with gusts” until the early morning hours today.
