Almost 1.3 million animals have already been vaccinated against bluetongue.

On October 30, 2025, 1,270,000 animals were vaccinated, a significant increase from the 278,000 vaccinated on January 31, according to José Manuel Fernandes, speaking to members of the parliamentary committees on Agriculture and the Budget.

While withholding further details or figures regarding the process, the former MEP urged producers to continue vaccinating their animals.

In May, the government implemented a total support of 1.9 million euros for sheep owners who experienced less than a 30% reduction in income due to the blue tongue disease.

The aid included was set at 48 euros per deceased sheep, recorded in the National Animal Information and Registration System (SNIRA).

Earlier that month, the government also launched assistance amounting to 9.9 million euros to address the impact of blue tongue disease and Storm Kirk.

Bluetongue disease is a mandatory reportable viral disease affecting ruminants, though it is not transmissible to humans.
