Almost 1,600 personnel were mobilized by 5:30 PM to fight 80 fires.

Between the registered incidents, 26 began during the nighttime period, from 8:00 PM Saturday to 7:00 AM today, the ANEPC stated in a release.

The fire that started on Saturday in São Cibrão, in the municipality of Vila Real, and spread to Sabrosa, was the most resource-intensive, being battled by 309 operatives and 103 vehicles.

The fire burning since Saturday in the municipality of Celorico de Basto, Braga district, engaged 200 operatives and 61 vehicles.

The third fire demanding significant resources started at 11:34 PM on Saturday in the Sirarelhos area and progressed to the zones of Gontães and Vila Cova, Vila Real district, being fought by 173 operatives and 54 vehicles.

The civil protection also noted that the fire in Lindoso, Ponte da Barca municipality (Viana do Castelo district), entered a resolution phase at 10:45 AM, but continues to be monitored by 443 operatives, supported by 143 vehicles.

Meanwhile, the municipalities of Ponte da Barca (Viana do Castelo), Castelo de Paiva (Aveiro), Arouca (Aveiro), Penamacor (Castelo Branco), and Idanha-a-Nova (Castelo Branco) have activated their municipal emergency and civil protection plans.

Portugal mainland entered an alert situation today due to the high risk of fires in the coming days, announced the Minister of Internal Administration on Saturday.

“Given the worsening weather forecasts indicating a significant risk of rural fires, the Government decided to declare an alert situation throughout the mainland,” announced Maria Lúcia Amaral, in a national address, without a question period.

This alert situation remains in effect until 11:59 PM on August 7, covering the entire mainland, “with the aim of reducing the risk of ignitions and enhancing response capacity.”

During this period, access to forest areas defined in municipal plans, the making of burnings and fires, the use of machinery in rural and forest areas, and the launching of fireworks, regardless of licenses, are prohibited.

“The ANEPC appeals to the population’s cooperation in complying with the measures in place and emphasizes that prevention and responsible behavior are essential to avoid ignitions and ensure everyone’s safety,” appeals the civil protection.
