Twenty-seven municipalities in the districts of Castelo Branco, Santarém, Portalegre, Guarda and Faro are today at maximum risk of fire, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

In the district of Faro, the municipalities of Tavira, São Brás de Alportel, Loulé, Silves, Portimão and Monchique remain at maximum risk of fire, the same level as in the Alentejo municipalities of Portalegre, Marvão, Castelo de Vide, Nisa and Gavião, all in the district of Portalegre.

In the Center region, the municipalities of Vila Velha de Ródão, Castelo Branco, Fundão, Oleiros, Proença-a-Nova, Sertã and Vila de Rei (Castelo Branco district) are in maximum danger, as well as the municipalities of Mação, Sardoal, Abrantes, Chamusca, Constância, Vila Nova da Barquinha, Tomar and Ferreira do Zêzere (Santarém), and Guarda (district capital).

In very high danger is a large part of the northern interior and the rest of the central territory of the country (municipalities in the districts of Vila Real, Bragança, Coimbra, Guarda, Viseu, Castelo Branco and Santarém), as well as some municipalities in the districts of Leiria, Lisbon, Beja, Portalegre and Faro.

IPMA also warns of high fire danger in practically all the rest of Alentejo and in municipalities in the districts of Aveiro, Porto and Vila Real.

The fire risk determined by IPMA has five levels, ranging from low to maximum, and calculations are obtained from air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and the amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 4,992 fire incidents have been recorded, affecting more than 10,500 hectares of rural areas.

According to the IPMA, the Faro district remains under yellow warning today, due to the forecast of very high temperatures, which can reach 35 degrees Celsius (ºC).

The maximum temperatures will oscillate between 23ºC in Aveiro and 37ºC in Évora, while the minimum temperatures will be between 14ºC in Viana do Castelo, Braga, Bragança, Vila Real and Viseu.

The IPMA predicts for today in the continent little cloudy sky, with wind sometimes strong, a decrease in the minimum temperature north of the Montejunto-Estrela mountain system, especially on the coast, and a small rise in the maximum temperature, except on the central and southern coasts.
