Amazon’s revenues rise driven by ‘cloud’ for AI

Amazon reported a quarterly revenue of $180 billion (€155 billion), marking a 13% increase compared to the same period last year and surpassing analysts’ expectations.

The 20% rise in cloud computing revenue, through its subsidiary AWS, played a crucial role in this growth, according to the company.

“Artificial intelligence is driving significant progress across all areas of our business,” stated Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, in a statement.

The company’s quarterly net profit reached $21.2 billion, boosted by a pre-tax accounting gain of $9.5 billion related to its investment in AI startup Anthropic, creator of the Claude model.

On Wednesday, AWS competitors Google and Microsoft also reported strong growth, benefiting from the rapid expansion of business driven by high demand for AI in servers and data centers.

On Tuesday, Amazon also announced a cost-cutting plan, revealing plans to eliminate 14,000 administrative jobs.

This initial wave of cuts could reach 30,000 by January, according to American media, representing nearly 10% of its 350,000 employees in support or strategic roles such as human resources, marketing, and management.

The group, which is also introducing robotics in its distribution centers, employs over 1.5 million people worldwide and is the second-largest employer in the United States.
