An incident involving the disappearance of a 16-year-old boy in the waters of Costa da Caparica has prompted a search operation by maritime authorities. According to the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the young man encountered difficulties while swimming at Dragão Vermelho beach, leading to the immediate launch of rescue efforts.
The AMN issued a statement indicating that at approximately 18:00, a distress alert was received about three young individuals struggling in the water. This prompted the deployment of crew members from the Cascais Lifesaving Station to the scene.
Upon arrival, it was discovered that one of the youths managed to return to shore independently, while another was rescued by lifeguards from the ‘Praia Protegida’ project operated by the Almada City Council in the district of Setúbal. The rescued individual was unconscious and received first aid from lifeguards before being transported to a hospital by the Cacilhas Volunteer Firefighters.
The statement from the AMN further noted, “The third young man ultimately disappeared at sea, and a search operation was immediately initiated in the area.”

The 16-year-old victim reportedly faced difficulties in the water at Dragão Vermelho beach.

In a subsequent communication, the AMN cautioned against the potential hazards posed by the sea, despite the school holidays and mild temperatures forecast for the coming days. “During this time of year, the sea remains in winter conditions and poses significant risks due to rough waves. The altered morphology of the beaches due to strong swells usually leads to dangerous troughs, steep slopes, whirlpools, and rip currents, which are not always marked at this time of the year,” the statement highlighted.
The AMN emphasized that most Portuguese beaches lack lifeguard supervision at this time, meaning the response to emergencies may be delayed. Consequently, the public is urged to behave responsibly and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

In Póvoa de Varzim, several incidents were reported at two distinct beaches, with local authorities warning that it is not yet the official bathing season.

The National Maritime Authority advises the public to avoid risky behaviors, such as approaching the water or walking on wet sand; to ensure that children are constantly supervised and kept close to an adult; and to maintain a safe distance from the waterline to avoid being caught by an unexpected wave. Additionally, the public is advised not to turn their back on the sea.
