Amount of new consumer loans rises 13.4% in June

The new consumer loans in June totaled 726.1 million euros, marking an increase of 13.4% year-on-year but a decrease of 10.2% from the previous month, announced the Banco de Portugal (BdP).

Provisional data released today by the central bank on the evolution of new consumer loans show that in June, compared to the same month last year, the amount of new personal loans rose by 14.3% to 319.2 million euros.

Meanwhile, the amount for new auto loan operations increased by 12.4% over the year to 294.0 million euros.

With a year-on-year variation below the others, the amount for credit cards and overdraft grew by 7.3% to 112.9 million euros.

In June, 136,963 consumer credit contracts were signed, a figure 10.4% above that recorded in the same month of 2024, but 9.9% fewer than in May.

In the final month of the first half of the year, 71,937 credit contracts were signed in the credit cards and overdraft category (a 4.0% year-on-year increase), 46,141 personal loans (18.8%), and 18,885 auto loans (8.3%).

Of the total new credit contracts in June, 4.7% were subsidized contracts, compared to 4.6% a year earlier and 4.3% in May.

“Subsidized credit contracts are concluded between the credit institution and the consumer, but part of the cost of credit is borne by a third party (for example, the point of sale where the consumer purchases the financed good),” explains the BdP.

In terms of the total amount, these subsidized credits represented 6.2% in June, compared to 5.8% in May and in the same month of the previous year.
