Amount of water decreased in August in all river basins

At the end of August, water storage levels by river basin were above the monthly averages from August 1990/91 to 2023/24, except for the Mondego, Mira, and Barlavento basins.

Out of the monitored reservoirs, 36% reported water availability exceeding 80% of total capacity, while 4% were below 40% of total capacity.

The Douro and Guadiana basins had the highest water volumes at 88.2% and 84.9%, respectively, followed by Vouga (79.5%), Sotavento (78.4%), Cávado (79.3%), Tejo (78%), Oeste and Alentejo (77%), Arade (75.7%), and Lima (71.5%).

By the end of August, the Barlavento basin had the lowest water quantity at 48.4%, followed by Sado at 51.7%, Mira at 54.5%, and Ave at 57.1%.

The Barlavento Algarve basin had retained the least water for many months, recovering only over the past winter. A year ago, it held just 16.7%.

Each river basin can correspond to more than one reservoir.
