“This expanded coalition is open to everyone who wishes to contribute to this ambitious project. This coalition is not just about adding votes, but rather about reaching a broad consensus for a new strategy for Coimbra, with commitments to the parishes and citizens,” stated Ana Abrunhosa.
During the public presentation of the PS candidates in Coimbra, held in the late afternoon, Ana Abrunhosa highlighted that this is a united effort to “transform Coimbra into an innovative, sustainable, and inclusive city.”
In the presence of the PS Secretary-General and the candidates for the councils of the Coimbra district, the former Minister of Territorial Cohesion argued that the 19 municipalities that constitute the Intermunicipal Community of the Coimbra Region, with 440,000 inhabitants, should pursue common projects.
“We dream of Coimbra as the capital of a metropolitan region, where an efficient, sustainable, and integrated public transport network is implemented,” she emphasized, indicating that Coimbra “will lead efforts to develop the neighboring territories.”
“We want Coimbra to be seen as a center that values innovation and creativity, where dreams come true. We will invest in quality education, promote culture and sports, support technological startups, and create accessible coworking spaces,” she stressed.
Besides promising to work on initiatives to encourage students to remain in Coimbra after completing their studies, the socialist candidate also mentioned the necessity to support entrepreneurs and attract investments.
“We will unite the banks of the Mondego River and highlight the potential of the left bank, working closely with the parishes for integrated and sustainable development,” she pledged, pointing to the commitment to accessible housing to retain qualified employment.
Regarding housing, she referred to the implementation of an ambitious public housing program with quality and affordable costs, facilitating the construction of new sustainable neighborhoods, prioritizing energy efficiency and access to public transport.
“We must find a solution that allows the recovery of abandoned buildings in the historic center, transforming neglected spaces into housing, public use buildings, commercial and business activities,” she clarified.
Her objectives also include the creation of programs to combat loneliness, improve mental health, and support people in vulnerable situations.
“We want Coimbra to be a municipality that welcomes, empowers, and provides security to all its citizens, regardless of age and social condition,” she asserted.
In addition to Ana Abrunhosa, other known candidates are former deputy José Manuel Pureza, representing the Left Bloc, and councilor Francisco Queirós, representing the CDU.
