
Despite the results not being finalized by 11:20 PM and uncertainty around securing an absolute majority, the economist addressed supporters to confirm her victory, assuring that Coimbra “will have a new way of life, with more ambition and courage in political decisions.”
The new president of the municipality identified housing as a primary focus of the coalition and pledged to tackle the “terrible” disparities in Coimbra, prioritizing the creation of daycare centers, health in parishes, and decentralization of services.
Speaking to numerous supporters gathered on Rua Visconde da Luz, in the Baixa area of Coimbra, in front of the campaign headquarters, Ana Abrunhosa announced that her mandate will be characterized by proximity and building bridges to solve issues.
“We must stay very close,” emphasized the former socialist minister of Territorial Cohesion, who expressed no surprise at the victory which ends just four years of governance by José Manuel Silva.
“The victory didn’t surprise me because the streets spoke to us,” she stressed.
Highlighting that the victory “is a great responsibility,” the new president aims for a city hall “with open doors to solve people’s problems.”
In her speech, Ana Abrunhosa underscored that her electoral program was crafted by “listening to Coimbra” and that the victory is the outcome of “many months of work.”
