Through the social network Bluesky, Ana Gomes shared the news this evening that António Vitorino will not be a candidate in the presidential elections aimed at selecting the successor to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in Belém.
“As always. It becomes more evident what I have already pointed out: António José Seguro should be the candidate supported by PS. To unite the left and democrats”, she advocated.
In the opinion of the former presidential candidate, “any other card would be divisive and suicidal”.
Former European Commissioner António Vitorino announced today that he will not run in next year’s presidential elections, stating that his candidacy “did not manage to gather consensus” to be the sole candidate in his political sphere.
“I will not present myself as a candidate. I have always said, and have always been consistent, that there should be only one candidate in this political area (…) and there is an objective fact: my candidacy did not manage to gather the consensus to be a single candidacy in this area, and therefore I will not present myself”, António Vitorino announced this evening on SIC Notícias.
The former European commissioner emphasized that he does not meet “the conditions to be the center-left candidate”.
