Ana Gomes, João Soares and Assis at a convention promoted by Seguro

A convention titled “Democracy of Trust, Democracy of Opportunities” is set to take place at the Aveiro Congress Center, starting at 14:00.

The purpose of this gathering is to “debate and present the four pillars of the ‘contract of trust and opportunities'” that presidential candidate António José Seguro aims to propose to the Portuguese people during a potential presidential term.

António José Seguro previously announced his intention to organize this event in an interview earlier this month.

The event is open to the public and will feature four panels taking place simultaneously. Each panel will include the presence of Seguro, who will deliver a closing address at 17:00.

The first panel will focus on “renewing democracy and creating stable institutional functioning.”

Participants in this discussion include PS MEP Francisco Assis, the mayor of Évora, socialist Carlos Zorrinho, and João Soares, former Minister of Culture and former mayor of Lisbon.

Other contributors include former Minister of Culture Isabel Pires de Lima, Matosinhos mayor and former President of the National Association of Municipalities Luísa Salgueiro, former deputy and professor Vitalino Canas, PS deputy Filipe Neto Brandão, and professor Ana Sofia Santos, among others.

The second panel will explore “new economic and sustainability frontiers” with Álvaro Beleza, president of SEDES – Association for Economic and Social Development, PS deputy Miguel Costa Matos, and several academics including Álvaro Nascimento, Luís Aguiar-Conraria, Ricardo Ferraz, Sílvia Conduto, and Susana Peralta.

The third panel, focused on “new social frontiers,” will include personalities such as former Health Minister Adalberto Campos Fernandes, former Secretary of State for Labour Miguel Fontes, academic Amílcar Moreira, clinical psychologist Américo Nave, physician João Varandas Fernandes, and the mayor of Misericórdia de Loures, Duarte Morgado.

Finally, the fourth panel, titled “New frontiers of Portugal in the world,” will feature moderators former Minister of Defense and Internal Administration Nuno Severiano Teixeira and former Secretary of State for Defense Ana Santos Pinto.

The participants in this final debate include ambassador and former presidential candidate Ana Gomes, ambassadors Francisco Seixas da Costa and José de Freitas Ferraz, as well as academics Bernardo Ivo Cruz, Carlos Gaspar, Luís Tomé, Sandra Fernandes, and Sónia Sénica.

The program highlights that this convention will be held in Aveiro, a city that hosted the Democratic Opposition Congress in April 1973, two years before the end of Portugal’s dictatorship.

The presidential elections are scheduled for January 18.
