Anacom available to work with authorities in AI cases

At the Anacom conference “Artificial Intelligence: The Challenges of Innovation and Regulation,” which is being held at the Museu do Oriente in Lisbon, Sandra Maximiano spoke on significant topics.

Anacom “is ready to work with the competent authorities and the ecosystem to host AI use cases in electronic communications networks and services, such as intelligent network automation, dynamic resource allocation, user protection, and anomaly and cyber threat detection, thus promoting the implementation of open standards, interoperability, and responsible data governance,” stated the official.

In this way, “it will contribute to AI developing reliably, with tangible benefits for citizens and businesses and in coherence with the European framework,” she emphasized, noting that, in the business context, AI “opens up an unprecedented opportunity.”

The president of Anacom also highlighted that international cooperation “is essential” and that the entity must “actively participate in this multilateral dialogue,” contributing with its expertise, defending the national context, and learning from other countries.

She recalled that the AI regulation (AI Act) “brings obligations and requirements for AI systems differentiated by the underlying level of risk, posing a challenge for regulation, which is to ensure that public and private entities understand, adapt and comply with these requirements.”

Furthermore, “the technological innovation that artificial intelligence fosters compels us to reflect on how we can keep pace with rapid change.”

For the official, “it is essential” to promote regulatory testing environments, open standards, and interoperability, the so-called AI ‘sandboxes’ that test new solutions in conditions of trust and safety.
