André Martins admits CDU defeat in Setúbal

“Everything is indicating that CDU will not win the elections in Setúbal. What is important to say is that I believe we have done everything possible during this term to serve our communities, in Setúbal and in Azeitão,” stated the Setúbal mayor.

André Martins made the statement at the CDU campaign headquarters around 9:30 PM when early results seemed to clearly show defeat in Setúbal, which, according to television projections, could lead to a majority of votes for the independent candidate Maria das Dores Meira, supported by PSD and CDS-PP.

André Martins mentioned, “There has never been such a significant investment in Setúbal as in the last four years.”

“Many of the projects are underway, only four or five have yet to begin due to company circumstances that did not allow advancement. Some projects had tenders that were launched but remained without bidders,” he said.

“But, at this moment, all projects are awarded contracts, yet some have not started. This proves our dedication, that we did everything possible to achieve our goals, which is the tradition of work, honesty, and competence that characterizes CDU,” he added.

If projections confirmed after 8:00 PM hold true, André Martins, who succeeded Maria das Dores Meira, might lose the district capital, governed by CDU for more than two decades, to his predecessor.

In the 2021 local elections, the CDU, a coalition of PCP/PEV, secured 34.4% of the votes, allowing them to govern the Setúbal Chamber with a relative majority of five officials, while PS (27.67%) obtained four officials and PSD (16.57%) only two.
