André Ventura says that Chega is “destined to govern Portugal”

“When these numbers came out today, we were happy with the recognition, but we have long known the strength we have in much of the country. We also know that this party is destined to govern Portugal,” stated Ventura.

André Ventura spoke at the opening of the party’s National Council meeting, which is convening tonight in Lisbon to discuss Chega’s strategy for the presidential elections early next year.

The Chega leader remarked that the party is “closer than ever” to winning legislative elections and forming a government.

In his speech, André Ventura once more claimed the position of opposition leader and took the opportunity to criticize the PS secretary-general.

“José Luís Caneiro tries to project a stronger and more energetic demeanor, but it doesn’t suit him because he is the kind of politician accustomed to the post-April 25 era, of pats on the back and collusion,” he indicated.

The president of Chega argued that this “started to stop working six years ago, and nowadays nobody buys it.”

He again accused the socialist leader of being “weak,” particularly in his “style of politics, which doesn’t demand accountability, isn’t firm in opposition and criticism, and is always there to ensure the worst of the system.”

A DN/Aximage barometer places Chega at the top of voting intentions for the first time, with 26.8%, followed by the AD (PSD/CDS-PP) with 25.9%.

In a September survey, Chega received the support of 26.8% of respondents – 4% more than the 22.76% it obtained in the legislative elections on May 18. It was followed by AD and the PS.
