The president of Chega is set to publicly announce his candidacy this afternoon during a press conference at the party’s headquarters, where journalists have been invited since Monday.
Earlier this year, the president of Chega expressed his intention to run for President of the Republic again but distanced himself from this possibility when early legislative elections were called. The party emerged stronger, becoming the second-largest force in parliament.
More recently, he indicated a stronger likelihood of moving forward. Last Friday, during the opening speech of a National Council meeting convened to discuss the presidential elections, André Ventura declared his willingness to be a candidate.
“If you want and believe I should go, here I am. If you think I shouldn’t go, here I am. If you believe someone else should go, here I am, as the one who best represents you,” he stated.
However, Ventura remarked that candidacy in the early presidential elections of next year was “not ideal” and that it would be “a bad sign for the country if the opposition leader is a candidate for President of the Republic.”
André Ventura previously ran for President of the Republic in 2021, finishing in third place with 11.90% of the votes, behind Ana Gomes, as Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was elected for a second term in Belém.
