Andreia Cardoso suspends mandate as PS deputy in the Azorean parliament

N Andreia Cardoso announced on Facebook that she informed Francisco César, the regional leader of PS/Açores, in mid-June of her decision not to seek re-election as head of the parliamentary group and of her consideration to suspend her mandate as a deputy, which took effect on November 1.

“I make this decision for a set of reasons, notably my understanding that in Terceira, new protagonists are needed, and this is not achieved by pointing fingers at others but by reflecting on ourselves. These new figures require time and space to assert themselves. The current political moment is different, as I have previously stated, and a new cycle demands new protagonists”, stated the deputy, former regional secretary of Social Solidarity in the PS regional government.

In her post, Andreia Cardoso, who also led the socialist parliamentary bench in the Azorean parliament, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her by party leaders and voters over the years.

“On October 18, 2000, I was elected for the first time to the Legislative Assembly of the Azores for the electoral district of the island of Terceira. It has been 25 years, almost all dedicated to political activity. During this time, I earned the trust of successive leaders of PS Açores, the people of Terceira (particularly those from Angra), and the affection of many Azoreans I met along this journey. On my part, I reciprocated with complete loyalty and much work,” she wrote.

Andreia Cardoso also highlighted that the recent years have been “intense,” especially the last one, which involved participating in four electoral events and working with the socialist parliamentary group.

“The last 5 years have been intense (the last year especially) and demanded a lot from me, presenting challenging obstacles. However, without false modesty, I believe I rose to the occasion and honored the Azores and the PS. In the last year, the PS participated in four electoral acts (one internal, European, national legislative, and local elections), and the Parliamentary Group consistently maintained its action and was combative, presenting proposals and strongly overseeing the Government’s work”, she added.

In mid-October 2025, Andreia Cardoso was succeeded as the leader of the PS parliamentary group in the Azorean Legislative Assembly by Terceira deputy Berto Messias, who returned to a post he held between 2010 and 2016.
