The announcement was made by Rui Carreira, the Secretary of State for the Civil Aviation, Maritime, and Port sectors, during a press session held Tuesday on the Program for the Expansion and Modernization of the Transport and Logistics Sector.
Rui Carreira stated that airport operations will transition from the current Luanda international airport “4 de Fevereiro” to AIAAN within the next five months, due to ongoing “challenges” regarding access to the airport. The facility is located in the province of Icolo e Bengo, approximately 40 kilometers from the center of Angola’s capital, Luanda.
According to Carreira, and as reported by the Jornal de Angola, the access difficulties were identified during a recent visit to the infrastructure by the Angolan President, João Lourenço.
The official noted that the delayed decision was made because there are still “preparations to be completed” to improve airport access, in addition to operational challenges, including delayed contracts, which make it difficult to complete the transition by next month.
“It is anticipated that in this phase, all international flights will be authorized and the airport will reach full operational capacity,” emphasized Rui Carreira.
Inaugurated on November 10, 2023, AIAAN is currently handling domestic flights and cargo.
