“The CAP has been essential for Portuguese society over these 50 years, fighting courageously in difficult times and firmly defending its right to exist,” stated António Barreto in Lisbon, at the congress marking the confederation’s 50th anniversary.
According to Barreto, even during times of significant economic, social, and political challenges, the CAP fulfilled its duty to defend the agricultural sector.
The sociologist also praised Rosado Fernandes and José Manuel Casqueiro, the first CAP leaders he met.
He recalled the first meeting with these leaders when he was in charge of the Agriculture portfolio, facilitated by a mutual friend — Ambassador José Cutileiro.
António Barreto mentioned being the first Minister of Agriculture to receive these representatives, noting that until then, they were barred from entering Terreiro do Paço, where the ministry was located.
In his speech, the former minister also noted that Portugal today is marked by immigration, “almost always chaotic,” and emigration, which he described as a rare occurrence.
“In balance, we end up losing. Make no mistake,” he emphasized.
