António Filipe faces Jorge Pinto’s candidacy with “tranquility”

“All citizens have the right to present themselves as candidates as long as they gather the necessary signatures. Parties are fully entitled to support the candidates they deem appropriate, and thus, I view the emergence of any candidate with complete naturalness and tranquility,” stated the candidate supported by the Portuguese Communist Party to journalists.

Before visiting the Aboim Ascensão Refuge in Faro, António Filipe expressed uncertainty about whether Jorge Pinto belongs to the left or the political center, considering it “difficult to define” and expressing confidence that “the candidate will define himself with the positions he will take.”

“I see the emergence of other candidates with complete naturalness, as I have always said, and my candidacy has always been asserted independently of other candidates that may arise from various political spectrums, as each stands on its own and the voters will decide,” he reiterated.

António Filipe stated that he “fears nothing” regarding the possible dispersion of votes on the left, recalling that when he presented his candidacy, “there was no candidate who defined themselves as a leftist candidate.”

Libre party deputy Jorge Pinto will run in the presidential elections in January, he confirmed to Lusa, having sent a message to his party’s members.

“With this candidacy, I want to continue to contribute to Libre being the party of concrete utopias. And there is so much we can do,” reads a message sent by Jorge Pinto to the members and supporters of the party led by Rui Tavares and Isabel Mendes Lopes, which Lusa accessed.

Jorge Pinto is seeking the support of Libre members after it was reported this week that the party should support its candidate rather than already known leftist candidates such as socialist António José Seguro, former BE coordinator Catarina Martins, or former PCP deputy António Filipe.

The presidential elections are scheduled for January 2026.
