
The journalist and music critic António Pires passed away in the early hours of Thursday at the age of 62, reports the publication Blitz.
Pires was a part of the editorial team at the newspaper Blitz for two decades, where he served as editor-in-chief from 1989 to 2001. He specialized in musical genres such as fado and world music. Even after Blitz transitioned from a newspaper to a magazine, he continued to contribute.
In addition to his work at Blitz, António Pires wrote for the newspapers Expresso, A Capital, Se7e, and the magazine Time Out. He was also the editor of Magazine HD, served as editorial director for the online publication O Fado & Outras Músicas do Mundo, and maintained the blog Raízes e Antenas.
Beyond journalism, Pires taught at the educational institutions Restart, ETIC, and World Academy. He also performed as a DJ at festivals, including the Festival Músicas do Mundo in Sines and the Festival Med in Loulé.
António Pires was married twice, with singer José Cid acting as the best man at his second wedding.
