APA denies competencies in the case that led to PJ searches

The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) announced today that it cooperated in the searches conducted this morning by the Judicial Police (PJ) at their premises, clarifying that it had no management, administration, or licensing responsibilities concerning the subject under investigation.

In a statement, the APA stated that as the National Water Authority, it actively collaborated in the procedures undertaken by the PJ, providing available technical and administrative elements.

“The APA did not hold any management, administration, or licensing responsibilities concerning the interventions under investigation,” the organization confirmed.

The PJ conducted searches this morning in Lisbon, Nazaré, and Caldas da Rainha, targeting, according to a source close to the process, the Nazaré City Hall, APA, Docapesca, the Lighting Directorate, and the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Regional Coordination and Development Commission due to suspicions of economic participation in business, forgery, corruption, and money laundering.

The matters at stake relate to the processing of a 40-year concession contract concerning the private use of a public maritime domain area—which includes the public water domain—located in the port area of the Porto de Abrigo da Nazaré, involving the rehabilitation and conservation of nine houses situated there for tourism purposes, the PJ explained in a statement.
