The proposal approved today during the detailed vote on the State Budget for 2026 (OE2026) increases the allowance for caregiving a child with a disability or chronic illness from 65% to 80% of the reference salary.
Moreover, the allowance for parents caring for a child with cancer rises from 65% to 100% of their reference salary.
Another proposal by PSD and CDS-PP was approved to change the monthly maximum limit from two to three IAS, “preventing income loss in such a difficult situation as a child’s illness,” as the proposal states.
The parliament also approved some points of a proposal by Chega on the same subject, one of which is identical to the PSD/CDS-PP proposal.
This proposal includes a provision that families of children with cancer, who receive the allowance and live more than 100 km from the treatment location with visits more than once a week, are entitled to monthly travel and accommodation support up to a maximum of 0.5 IAS, when no temporary accommodation is available.
Furthermore, “the transport of the patient and a caregiver is ensured when clinically indicated, and hospitals must ensure uniform application of the regime,” according to Chega’s proposal.
