April 25th. Young people join celebrations to defend democracy

Young people will participate in the traditional parade in the capital as part of initiatives to commemorate April 25 in Leiria, the Algarve, and the Azores, according to Maria Oliveira, a member of the organization.

Volunteers will distribute carnations and display European flags, “a symbolic gesture that emphasizes the importance of European integration in Portugal’s democratic process,” stated the group associated with the European Parliament.

Maria Oliveira mentioned that the movement welcomes youths starting from age 14 and was established in 2019 to encourage voting in that year’s European elections.

“We stand for democracy and European values. It doesn’t matter who you vote for, what matters is voting,” summarized the volunteer, highlighting the primary message the youth aim to convey on this April 25.

Unidos.eu is described as “a dynamic, connected, and growing community that strives for the evolution of democracy in Europe.”

The movement, which is non-partisan, is an initiative of the European Parliament and comprises around 350,000 individuals.

Among various initiatives commemorating the April 25, 1974, Revolution across the country, a popular parade is usually held in Lisbon, organized by a promoting committee that includes dozens of entities, prominently featuring the Associação 25 de Abril.

This year, the celebrations coincide with three days of national mourning declared following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88, with the funeral scheduled for the upcoming Saturday.
