AR remembers Diogo Jota as a reference of “work, humility, and overcoming”

A motion of condolences was presented by the parliament’s president, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, and unanimously approved by the deputies, with which the government associated itself.

The text expresses “profound sorrow for the tragic and premature death of the two brothers” and extends “heartfelt condolences” to their family, friends, and colleagues, “with the certainty that their legacy of talent, dedication, and service to the country will remain, and continue to leave a mark on Portuguese football.”

On Thursday, the Portuguese footballer Diogo José Teixeira da Silva (Diogo Jota), aged 28, and his brother, André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, 25, also a footballer, died following a car accident.

The text notes that Diogo Jota was born in Massarelos, in the municipality of Porto, on December 4, 1996, and began his sports career in the youth ranks of Gondomar, later joining the squad of Paços de Ferreira and, subsequently, donning the colors of Futebol Clube do Porto.

The athlete had been playing in the English League since 2017, initially for Wolverhampton and, over the past five years, for Liverpool.

In service of the Portuguese National Football Team, he recorded 14 goals and 49 caps, competed in the 2020 and 2024 European Championships, and several editions of the Nations League, which he won in 2018/19 and recently in 2024/25.

“Diogo Jota belonged to a generation of athletes who have helped raise Portuguese football to a new level of technical excellence and collective work. The testimony of his teammates and those who worked with him reflects the human values and spirit of ‘fair play’ that characterized his conduct. Similar to his brother, who was a forward for Penafiel, he seemed to have a long and promising future ahead, both personally and professionally,” the text recalls.

The motion of condolences highlights “the determination with which he represented Portugal’s colors, both in service of the National Team and in his personal sports career,” making Diogo Jota “a reference of work, humility, and overcoming challenges.”
