Architects’ union joins the general strike on December 11

The SINTARQ union has announced its first strike call in the architecture sector, highlighting this move in a statement.

Criticizing the proposed labor package by the Government that prompted the general strike, the union described the changes as “a grave setback and a direct attack on rights that workers have gained through years of struggle and mobilization,” asserting a complete rejection of these proposed changes.

The union stated that the Government’s draft proposal reflects an agenda favoring employers’ interests, perpetuating the notion that increasing work hours and reducing workers’ rights enhances productivity.

Furthermore, they emphasized that this approach to ‘flexibility’ undervalues work quality, disregards workers’ experience and knowledge, and renders them as expendable resources.

The CGTP and UGT unions have called for a general strike on December 11 against the Government’s proposed labor law revision, marking the first joint strike since June 2013, during Portugal’s ‘troika’ intervention.

The architecture workers’ union advocates for the sector’s future to be rooted in stability, professional value, and real improvement of working conditions, opposing low wages, unpaid overtime, or misleading notions of flexibility that disguise temporary contracts and career stagnation.

SINTARQ has also announced plans for two meetings on November 29 in Porto and Lisbon, with an online broadcast, to address workers’ concerns.
