Are they Portuguese? What language do they speak? Who are the TVDE drivers?

After one month of operation, the ride-hailing data platform in Portugal has provided a detailed overview of the sector. Who are these drivers?

“The understanding of the ride-hailing sector in Portugal has deepened, showing that in March 2025, there were 37,495 active drivers. Of these, 33,803 (90.1%) were male, and 3,692 (9.9%) were female. Regarding the ages of the drivers, more than half (59.4%) were between 30 and 49 years old, with a smaller percentage above the age of 60,” it states in a report.

Are the majority Portuguese? What language do they speak?

Concerning the nationality of active drivers in March, “there was great diversity, with 98 nationalities represented in total.” The majority were from Portugal (52.8% of the total), followed by Brazil (20.6%) and India (10.4%).

“Data analysis from the platform shows that 76.4% of active drivers in March spoke Portuguese as their first language,” it further states.

Regarding vehicles, 34,447 were active last month, with almost a third (32.9%) powered by alternative fuels and 66.9% by combustion engines.

For vehicle age, it was found that 61.7% were less than five years old.

Developed by the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (IMT), Uber, and Bolt,.

“This joint data-sharing platform between IMT, Uber, and Bolt allows us to understand the sector more deeply with quantitative and qualitative data, paving the way for a more informed, dynamic, and robust supervision, which is also of great utility in the ongoing debate about revising the sector’s legislation,” said João Jesus Caetano, the president of IMT.
