Are you a blood donor? This Saturday is ‘your’ day (if you’re not, here’s what to do)

This Saturday marks World Blood Donor Day, recognized annually on June 14. Blood donations have decreased since 2010, as highlighted by the Association of Voluntary Blood Donors of Santa Maria da Feira, indicating various actions need to be taken.

The National Health Service (SNS) expressed gratitude in their message, stating, “Today we thank all individuals who donate blood and thus contribute to saving many lives. Every donation counts. Be supportive, donate blood!” This was shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

In another update, the SNS outlined the requirements for beginning blood donation.

What is needed?

  • To donate blood, one must weigh at least 50 kg, be 18 years or older (those aged 17 can donate with parental consent and/or emancipation through marriage as stipulated by law), and be in good health;
  • Blood donations can be made at a Blood Collection Session or Blood Collection Service. Locations and schedules can be checked here.

For more information and to clarify any doubts regarding blood donations, consult the SNS resources via this link.

What to bring?

At donation centers, present a photo identification document (ID Card, Citizen Card, passport, resident card, or driving license), and fill out a questionnaire. A qualified healthcare professional will then assess your eligibility to donate blood through a clinical evaluation and physical examination (including checks on weight, height, hemoglobin, and blood pressure).
