Are you going to the derby? Attention: Four Lisbon Metro stations close at 5:30 PM

The transportation company announced today that changes in the operation of the metro are being implemented “for security reasons and on the advice of the PSP.”

“This measure is part of the security plan defined by the competent authorities, in the context of the Benfica-Sporting football match, and the expectation of a large number of supporters around Praça Marquês de Pombal,” the statement notes.

According to the company, if there is “exceptionally high demand, changes in train frequency may occur,” which could “result in possible increased waiting times across the network.”

Throughout Saturday, the Lisbon Metro will “make every effort to enhance service on the Blue line before the match and on all lines after its conclusion.”

“The operation will be monitored continuously, adjusting the service based on detected demand, within the available technical and operational capacities,” the company states.

Lisbon Metro further clarifies that the service “could be subject to other operational changes” should they be prescribed by the PSP depending on the evolving situation.

Sporting and Benfica, tied for the top position in the Primeira Liga, will face off this Saturday at 6:00 PM at Lisbon’s Estádio da Luz in the 33rd round of the Primeira Liga, a match that could decide the 2024/25 national champion.
