A 29-year-old man was arrested on Monday after assaulting his mother, father, and brother, forcing them to seek refuge in a room in Odivelas, Lisbon.
According to a statement from the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the Public Security Police (Cometlis), the incident occurred around 9:30 PM. Officers arrived at the residence following an alert about a domestic violence situation involving knives.
“Upon arrival, the police encountered the suspect holding a kitchen knife in one hand and a bottle of alcoholic drink in the other. Orders were immediately given to disarm the suspect to ensure everyone’s safety while the circumstances of the incident were being clarified,” it stated.
The Cometlis explained that “inside the home, in one of the rooms, the officers found three more individuals, identified as the suspect’s family members (father, mother, and brother).”
The suspect became “aggressive and pushed one of the officers present in an attempt to attack the family members, and also made threats,” it noted.
A “forceful intervention” was necessary in this situation, as the man was highly resistant to the officers, even when “restrained, handcuffed, and detained.”
“After collecting witness statements, it was found that the suspect had initiated a discussion with his mother, demanding money to support his alcohol and drug addiction. The suspect began to assault his mother, at which point the father and brother tried to intervene and were also assaulted,” detailed Cometlis, explaining that the trio took refuge in one of the rooms fearing for their lives.
The victims mentioned that such attacks have been frequent. The suspect, after appearing before the judicial authority, was remanded in custody, the most severe coercive measure.
