Arrested after setting fire to a tent in Moita. Wanted to fake a theft.

The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) has apprehended a man accused of setting fire to a shack containing two men in Moita, Setúbal district. The incident erupted in the early hours of Saturday following an altercation involving the suspect and three men. During the confrontation, the 26-year-old suspect’s mobile phone was allegedly stolen, leading to a series of assaults among the parties involved.

The PJ detailed that the suspect was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical attention. After being discharged, and learning that one of the assailants lived in a shack, he intentionally set off to the location, dousing the dwelling with fuel. Using a direct flame, he ignited the shack and fled the scene. The fire resulted in the total destruction of the shack. Fortunately, the two occupants managed to escape without injury.

The suspect, identified as a consumer of illicit substances, reportedly resides in abandoned houses and engages in thefts. He has no criminal record and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday to determine appropriate coercive measures.
