A man was arrested on Wednesday for committing fraudulent introduction into consumption in Vidago, Chaves, in the district of Vila Real, in an operation that led to the seizure of 400,000 cigarettes.
In a statement released on Sunday, it was detailed that the event occurred during a National Republican Guard (GNR) operation focusing on monitoring the movement of goods.
The vehicle carrying the 58-year-old man was inspected, revealing “20,000 packs of tobacco, packaged in 40 cardboard boxes.”
The statement noted, “It was determined that the manufactured tobacco did not bear the required special stamp for its possession, circulation, and commercialization in the national territory, with the suspect unable to present any justification document for its legal production, circulation, and introduction into consumption.”
The GNR reported the seized tobacco’s value “amounts to 100,000 euros, with its illegal sale projected to have caused a loss to the Portuguese State of more than 60,000 euros in terms of the Special Consumption Tax (IEC).”
Following the arrest, the case was communicated to the Judicial Court of Chaves.
