A 40-year-old man was detained by the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) on November 25, under suspicion of domestic violence.
The PSP revealed in a statement to the newsrooms this Saturday that the investigation began in 2024 after the victim approached a police station to report her partner. The couple has a daughter, who was just four years old at the time.
The statement said, “The victim reported the assaults, threats, insults, and strict control over her daily life.” The woman attempted to end the relationship and distance herself, but the man did not accept the separation and became increasingly aggressive.
In November of this year, post-separation, the man escalated his violence by threatening his now ex-partner with a firearm, declaring his intention to take away their daughter.
The PSP added, “The last incident occurred when the suspect was near the victim’s residence.” The suspect encountered the victim and their daughter in public, “and took the minor, disappearing with her for four days, remaining unreachable and sending only messages to the victim threatening that she would never see the girl again.”
In light of the circumstances, authorities issued an urgent arrest warrant, executed within two hours. Concurrently, the PSP executed two non-residential search warrants on vehicles, where they seized “a 9mm firearm and two mobile phones.”
The detainee has appeared for an initial interrogation, where the court imposed measures including a prohibition of any contact with the victim and a restriction to remain at least 750 meters away from her.
