A 43-year-old man has been apprehended by the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) after deceiving an elderly woman in Olivais, Lisbon, earlier this month, specifically on May 8, to steal gold jewelry from her.
The suspect approached the victim while she was walking alone, claiming to be a “jewelry merchandise dealer.” He then asked to examine the gold necklace she wore around her neck.
Convinced by his assertion, the elderly woman, according to PSP’s statement, “handed him a gold chain for evaluation.”
However, upon noticing that the woman also had a gold ring, the thief requested to see it as well. As the woman removed the ring from her finger, he snatched it forcefully and fled in a car, leaving the “victim completely helpless.”
Following a week-long investigation, the police identified and detained the suspect.
The man has since been released but is required to report to the authorities bi-weekly.
