
A 32-year-old Portuguese national has been detained on charges related to “terrorist offenses” following a European arrest warrant issued by Spanish authorities. The individual had been residing in Quinta do Conde, Sesimbra, and had been consuming official propaganda from terrorist organizations such as Daesh and Al-Qaeda since 2021.
According to Spanish authorities, the investigation revealed that the detainee continually consumed propaganda from terrorist organizations like Daesh and Al-Qaeda from 2021, made statements regarding jihadist ideology, and expressed intentions to travel to conflict zones to join these organizations.
The arrest is linked to events that took place in October 2024, in the Spanish city of Huelva. Since then, the Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ) and the Guardia Civil have been in direct contact to monitor and expand the information gathering on this suspect.
Spanish authorities emphasized the successful collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts between the Guardia Civil and the Portuguese Judicial Police, which led to locating the suspect in Quinta do Conde, Portugal, and his arrest pursuant to a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Spanish Judicial Authority.
The young man, charged with “terrorist offenses and affiliation with a terrorist group,” appeared before the Court of Appeal for his initial judicial interrogation on Friday.
The arrest was executed by the National Counter-Terrorism Unit (UNCT) of the PJ.
