Artists from Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and Portugal exhibit for the heroes

In the year marking the 50th anniversary of Cabo Verde’s independence, an exhibition features works by artists Bangé Yhodhy, Hélder Cardoso, Irley Barbosa, Pedro Amaral, Sidney Cerqueira, and Tutu Sousa.

The Centro Cultural de Cabo Verde (CCCV) notes that the exhibition aims to “honor some national heroes, particularly the great heroine Titina Silá and Cabo Verdean women in general, for their crucial role in the country’s economy, culture, and education.”

Titina Silá was a guerrilla fighter and freedom fighter for her homeland, Guinea, and was killed on her way to Guinea-Conakry to attend the funeral of Amílcar Cabral, one of the founders of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cabo Verde (PAIGC).

Bangé Yhodhy was born and raised in Bafatá, Guinea-Bissau, a country native to Irley Barbosa Rivera and Sidney Cerqueira. Tutu Sousa was born in Cabo Verde, as was Hélder Cardoso. Pedro Amaral was born in Lisbon.
