ASAE opens 30 cases for non-compliance with air quality in buildings

The Portuguese Authority for Food and Economic Security (ASAE) has announced the results of a national operation conducted in recent weeks, focusing on ensuring compliance with legal requirements for economic operators, specifically regarding indoor air quality in large commercial and service buildings (GES) with a floor area of 1,000 m² or more.

ASAE’s Operational Units inspected the buildings of over 70 economic operators, including tourist developments, warehouses, and retail establishments, initiating 30 administrative offense proceedings.

The primary infraction identified was the failure to comply with mandatory legal requirements concerning indoor air quality by the owners of both small and large commercial and service buildings.

In Portugal, the ventilation and monitoring of indoor air quality in public buildings (and commercial and service buildings) must meet requirements such as annual air quality assessments, pollutant limits, and minimum new air flow rates and are subject to ASAE inspections.

Poor indoor air quality can affect the health, comfort, and productivity of occupants, with the requirements aiming to ensure a healthy and safe environment.
