ASPP reacts to filing on operation in Martim Moniz: “Important”

The Police Professionals Union Association (ASPP/PSP) responded on Thursday to the closure of the investigation into the operation conducted by the Public Security Police (PSP) at Martim Moniz in December, where the General Inspection of Internal Administration (IGAI) determined that all legal criteria were met.

“We are pleased to note that this operation was carried out like many others, in various places, and accompanied by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP). At the time of the discussion, the ASPP/PSP considered and regretted that many political and media figures misinterpreted this operation, aligning it with other frameworks and purposes,” the entity stated in a communiqué.

The organization further noted that “it is extremely important for the IGAI to intervene in this and many other operations, locations, and contexts where police officers perform their duties. This will assess the conditions in which they work, whether during off-duty hours, after normal working hours, with the necessary means and equipment, and under essential conditions.”

ASPP also called for “the imperative need to address public safety with calmness, moderation, seriousness, and responsibility,” to “respect the work that professionals carry out and mitigate the constraints arising from the lack of structural governmental responses.”

It’s noteworthy that, according to Diário de Notícias (DN), IGAI indicated that the special criminal prevention operation by the PSP, which gained attention due to images showing dozens of migrants standing against a wall, was “justified by the conditions and objectives.”

The inquiry was closed after the body concluded that the operation, which took place on December 19, complied with “the general and specific legal precepts.”

It should be recalled that the operation sparked significant controversy when an image emerged showing dozens of individuals, mostly foreigners from the large community in that area, standing against a wall with their hands up, prompting comments on the police’s procedure.

Two individuals were arrested, and nearly 4,000 euros in cash were seized, along with batons, documents, a knife, a mobile phone, and a hundred counterfeit items.
