A 32-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning after assaulting a Public Security Police (PSP) officer with punches and a headbutt, following a family dispute on a public street in Caldas da Rainha.
After an initial dispute, apparently resolved by the authorities, the PSP District Command of Leiria was alerted to a new argument in a parking lot. They found that “the suspect was still very agitated and shouting at his partner, who was holding their daughter in her arms.”
“Despite the police officers’ efforts to pacify the situation, the aggressor took the child from the mother and moved towards his vehicle. At this point, one of the officers, concerned for the child’s safety and well-being, tried to make him aware that he might not be in the best condition to drive,” the PSP detailed in a statement.
The officer’s action “made the suspect even more aggressive,” and he exited the vehicle, almost dropping “the child to the ground.” While trying to prevent the fall, the police officer “was assaulted with a headbutt and several punches to the head.”
The man, who is known to authorities for suspected involvement in various crimes including physical assault, theft, and threats, was arrested and taken to the PSP station in Caldas da Rainha.
Presented before the on-duty court, he was released and notified to appear before the judicial authority in his area of residence.
According to the PSP, the assaults did not result in serious injuries to the police officers involved.
