The highest decision-making body of the party will convene on Monday evening, November 27, to determine the voting stance on the general provisions of the budget proposal presented by the PSD/CDS-PP government.
This decision precedes a scheduled vote in the Assembleia da República set for Tuesday.
Under the leadership of Rui Tavares and Isabel Mendes Lopes, the party will also discuss the upcoming presidential elections and outline a “timeline and methodology for deciding support for a presidential candidacy.”
In recent developments, deputy Jorge Pinto has announced his candidacy for the Presidency and has called on members and supporters of Livre to endorse his bid.
The Livre party traditionally decides which presidential candidates to support through internal consultations with its members and supporters. In 2016, for example, 87.1% of those consulted expressed support for António Sampaio da Nóvoa.
Jorge Pinto emphasized in a statement to Lusa that official endorsement from his party should only follow an internal consultation with members and supporters.
“I have announced my candidacy, and now I seek validation from all my party comrades, although this is a candidacy aiming to engage far beyond the members, supporters, and voters of Livre,” he added.
The left-leaning candidates for the presidential race include socialist António José Seguro, former BE coordinator Catarina Martins, and former PCP deputy António Filipe.
